CHOOSING THE RIGHT OPTION

There is no one “right” or “best” form of birth control. The form of birth control that is right for you individually, will depend on a number of issues: Your gender, age, marital status, financial status; your sexual activity level, your risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, the impact that a pregnancy would have on your life, your self-consciousness or embarrassment with certain methods, privacy issues and a multitude of other variables.

The key is in first determining what birth control features are “must-haves” and what birth control features are “nice-to-have’s”. For example; a young married couple who ultimately want a family but aren’t quite ready, may see a potential unplanned pregnancy as an inconvenience rather than devastating. Consequently they may value physical pleasure, spontaneity, convenience more highly relative to contraceptive effectiveness.  On the other hand, a young unmarried but sexually active girl living at home with ultra-conservative parents may place a very high value on privacy and contraceptive effectiveness and other factors will be secondary.

The choice of which birth control is right for you is a highly personal choice which you need to make after first educating yourself about each method.

Another option for women in permanent relationships such as marriage, is to consider asking their partner to consider a permanent contraceptive solution such as a vasectomy or a Pro-Vas occlusion procedure.
