MALE BIRTH CONTROL OPTIONS

Historically there has been three primary birth control methods available to men; (1) Withdrawal (2) Condoms and (3) Vasectomy. Recently a new method called Pro-Vas Occlusion has entered the field. Each of these methods has strengths and weaknesses in terms of effectiveness, convenience, cost, side-effects, permanence and impact on the quality of the sexual experience.

Withdrawal is quite ineffective and barely qualifies as a “method”. Condoms have the advantage of non-permanence, but they are inconvenient, reduce sensation and interrupt the flow of sexual relations. Additionally, over time they are not cost-efficient do they provide very effective birth control. Vasectomy offers high effectiveness and convenience. It has no adverse impact on sexual pleasure and over time, is cost-effective, but it requires surgery and can come with complications.
The minimally invasive nature of Pro-Vas Occlusion offers the promise of high-effectiveness, minimal risk of complications and quicker recovery, however it does come at a higher cost than traditional vasectomy and data to support the efficacy of the procedure is less than exists for vasectomy.
