The Presence of Motile Sperm in the First Semen Analysis
A paper by Labrecque et al (Fertil Steril. 2005 May;83(5):1435-41) looked at 309 patients who had motile sperm in their first semen analysis and found that 56.3% of men with motile sperm in their first semen analysis experienced delayed success. The authors concluded that; “The decision to repeat vasectomy should not rely on a single semen analysis showing motile sperm.”
A paper by Edwards (Fertil Steril. 1993 Feb;59(2):431-6) revealed that motile sperm can be found in successfully vasectomized patients for up to 9 weeks post-vasectomy. In such cases, the sperm count was generally <1 million/mL but was measured as high as 33 million/mL in some patients at 4 weeks and after 10 ejaculations. At 14-weeks no motile sperm were found but some of these men still showed the presence of nonmotile sperm but were cleared for unprotected intercourse. |
